For some time now, LED tubes have been becoming increasingly popular due to their tremendous savings potential in terms of energy consumption and maintenance. However, since autumn last year, after a few press reports, there has been a growing uncertainty on the part of customers as regards their safety and legal liability in the case of retrofitting.

Because we want tomorrow's best, we prevent the good of today and retain yesterday's bad. This captures the words of former German Minister for the Environment, Klaus Töpfer, in describing the dilemma associated with many policy decisions related to energy. Investments are postponed in the hope of finding better and more efficient technical solutions. Many municipalities also find it difficult to start investing in modern LED technology at this stage, despite the fact that they can save up to 70% of their energy costs as a result. Whether it is worth clinging to energy-guzzling mercury lamps, though, is often less a question of what is technically possible than a matter of simple arithmetic.

Kleines Wiesental / Sittensen, June 2010. -Uniformity in all districts, consideration of safety requirements, economical use of energy – the Kleines Wiesental municipality has embarked on a path with their street lighting that fulfils these requirements. In future all street lights will be equipped with economical and environmentally friendly LED technology. 90 lamps have already been procured, of which 75% are funded from the Federal Government's Konjunkturpaket II stimulus package.

Uplengen/ Sittensen, 10 May 2010. After a successful test phase early this year, the Uplengen municipality (district of Leer) took an environmentally groundbreaking decision. The street lighting in the cross-town link of the town of Remels will be converted to state-of-the-art LED technology. The switch-over will save 70% energy and protect the environment: Per year, a reduction of over 9 tons of CO2 can be achieved through the 55 lamps alone that are to be installed during the next weeks.
